We see here a selection of photographs illustrating
where certain inscriptions are located on important landmarks in Florence.
Their importance should be evident immediately to most everyone
acquainted
with the architecture with which they are associated: the first two
of the Cathedral of Florence recording its date of construction; a
third, on Ponte Vecchio recording the flood of 1333 A.D. and the reconstruction
afterwards - also showing an interesting feature in that the text,
when scanned, is of six Latin hexameter lines; the fourth, the Column
of Saint Zenobius, Bishop of Florence, precariously situated in a
traffic zone in Piazza San Giovanni, with only a metal fence protecting
it from damage.
All four of these photographs I made when engaged
in this research as a Fulbright Grantee in Florence.
